Oak Hill History

The original title of the current owner extends back to John Cole- “Cole Settlement” which is now known as Independence. Cole was leader of one of the original 300 families who were brought by Stephen F. Austin to Texas. And thought to be a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence.

Oak Hill was built in 1948 and served as the headquarters for the Baker Family. Joe Baker of Somerville, TX- Hub, Eddie and Joe Jr. owned 10,000 acres and leased 17,000. Used for cotton farming in the Brazos River bottom during the Great Depression. One of the largest cotton plantation farms in this fertile area of Texas.

James Earl Rudder delivered the vote for his friend Lyndon B. Johnson from Menard County during LBJ’s famed “first run for senate”, so the Bakers delivered Burleson County for LBJ. Thus commencing a life time friendship, LBJ visited the Baker properties on many occasions and LBJ and John Connolly drank whiskey in the Bar Room at the Baker Plantation Home.  LBJ and the Bakers, great supporters of rural Texans, helped fund the paving of FM50 from Brenham through the Brazos Bottom, the construction of 1361 (commonly known as the Baker Highway) to Somerville and the construction of Lake Somerville, bordering Burleson, Washington and Lee Counties.

Prehistoric Indian Camp site—Oak Tree by the house is “pulled down” which would never have grown that way naturally. Thought of as sacred grounds. Thousands of the arrowheads have been found there.

Whe the surrounding counties were named for: Burleson- General in the Republic of Texas Army. Washington- George Washington. Lee- Robert E. Lee
